Merkel and Basescu meeting, a possible discussion to solve the Transnistrian conflict
The political analyst Petru Bogatu is trying to find an answer to the question “Why Angela Merkel has come to Romania?”. The analyst considers that: “This is an interesting question that other observers of the international politics don’t ask themselves. And this is not accidental. In its apparent simplicity the interrogation is not as rhetoric as it may seem to be to first sight. The attention of the media after the Prut is focused on the Berlin’s promise to the unequivocal support of Romania to enter the Schenghen region, and so it lost the real bet of the visit”.
The analyst supposes that the main purpose of the visit was to find a solution to the Transnistrian conflict. And this can be deducted by the affirmation of Angela Merkel that “There is a common interest to be solved, the problems in Republic of Moldova”, also the Chancellor mentioned the Transnistria region.
The question that is posed by Mr. Bogatu is whenever the illegal self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria will obtain a legitimate status, or maybe the status of a region with a wide autonomy in case if the conflict is solved with the EU help and Russia retreats its armed forces from the territory of Moldova.
The discussion of the Transnistrian problem is more dynamic from the period when Germany entered the Security Council of the U.N. The main obligation of Germany in the Security Council is to solve the regional conflicts. Angela Merkel proposed earlier to Dmitri Medvedev, the President of Russia, to find a way to solve the Transnistrian conflict in exchange for the right of visa-free travel into the EU for Russian citizens.
Also talks concerning the solution of the Transnistria conflict can take place on 17-18 October, at the meeting between Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitri Medvedev.
